Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

SARTA’s drive to sustainability began ten years ago when the transit system began to replace its fleet of diesel buses with vehicles powered by clean compressed natural gas. Today, SARTA operates 36 CNG vehicles as well as a modern CNG fueling station that is open to the public and is used regularly by a number of local businesses.

After more than a decade in regular service and traveling millions of miles across the roads and highways of Stark County in nearly every imaginable weather condition, SARTA’s CNG buses have proven their worth as the clean, green, domestically produced, affordable, alternative to traditional fossil fuels…

Cleaner…

CNG Reduces health-harming air pollutants by producing 95% less particulate matter, carbon monoxide emissions and 80% less nitrogen oxide emissions.

Greener…

CNG lowers greenhouse gas emissions by 26-29% in cars and light trucks and 23% in medium to heavy-duty vehicles like SARTA’s buses.

Domestic…

98% of natural gas is produced in North America which both reduces our dependence on foreign oil and creates good-paying jobs.

Affordable…

CNG Costs 25-40% less than diesel fuel with maintenance cost equal to or lower than diesels.
