SARTA receives grant to help buy cleaner-energy bus

January 20, 2025

COLUMBUS – The Stark Area Regional Transit Authority is getting a $531,150 grant to help replace a diesel-powered bus with a new compressed natural gas-powered bus.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and Ohio Department of Transportation announced the grant Friday.

The grant pays 80% of the cost to replace one model year 2011 diesel-powered transit bus. According to the Ohio EPA and the ODOT, the grant is one of five totaling more than $12.8 million awarded to Ohio transit authorities to replace 19 aging diesel buses.

The Ohio EPA estimates this year’s grants will remove almost two tons of air pollutants annually to help counties meet and maintain federal air-quality standards.

The grants are funded from federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality dollars allocated to Ohio by the Federal Highway Administration. A committee of Ohio EPA and ODOT representatives selected the organizations and businesses receiving grants.
